5 on 5 Gridiron Challenge
[Revised 4/05]
Each team has a 5 minute grace period after its scheduled game time
to field a minimum of 4 players, including at least 2 females for co-ed league. Otherwise,
the opposing team's captain may either decide to play, permit borrowed players or take win
by forfeit.
If raining prior to opening kick-off, game will be postponed and
rescheduled: call 703-851-3332 to confirm. If raining prior to second half kick-off, game
will be temporarily recorded as tie and rescheduled. If raining after second half
kick-off, game will be stopped and current score recorded as final. If game tied, however,
10 minute sudden death will occur.
Game clock will start immediately at kick-off and will run non-stop
for 20 minutes/half, except for final 2 minutes/half where clock stops on touchdown,
incomplete pass or ball carrier running out of bounds and resumes with snap. Regular
season ties will result in one 10 minute sudden death overtime. During playoffs, ties will
result in consecutive 10 minute overtimes. Each team is permitted two 1 minute time-outs
per half.
Metal-cleated shoes are illegal on the playing field and will
automatically result in a game forfeit for the offending team.
Final standings will be based on team record with top team per
conference qualifying for championship game, following playoff semi-finals. Should any
two teams have the same record, the following tie-breaking system will be employed: 1.
Record in head-to-head competition; 2. Points differential for season; 3. Coin toss.
Player trades must be approved by all players involved, by captains
for both teams and by league commissioner. Extra players may also be added to team roster
during season. All such roster moves must be completed by game 3.
Kicker must placekick from tee or teammates hold at 20 yard
line. Kicking team must release after kick on both kickoffs and punts. No fake punts or
quick kicks allowed. Ball must be touched without full possession by receiving team for
kicking team to recover on punt. First team to recover on kickoff has possession once ball
crosses mid-field. Ball kicked through opposite end-zone results in touch-back and
receiving player may kneel in end-zone for touch-back. If kicked out-of-bounds, receiving
team may accept possession at its own 40 yard line or force re-kick with loss of 5 yards
for kicking team. If re-kick out of bounds, receiving team must accept spot.
Following kick-off return or touchback, offensive team has four
downs to cross mid-field line. Regulation football provided, but offensive team may
substitute its own ball (K-2 type balls not permitted). Offensive team has 1 minute from
conclusion of previous play before delay of game penalty resulting in loss of down. Delay
of game penalty will also be assessed if kicking team fails to placekick or punt within 1
minute from conclusion of previous play.
After the ball is snapped, all five offensive players are eligible. Offensive
player receiving snap will serve as quarterback. All defensive players must line up at
least 5 yards off line of scrimmage. After referees 7 second count, defense may rush
quarterback or wait for an additional 5 seconds, resulting in coverage sack and loss of
down if quarterback fails to release ball and defensive player does not cross line of
scrimmage. Quarterback may only run once defensive player crosses line of scrimmage.
Defense allowed one free blitz per series of downs. Failure to announce blitz
will result in defensive off-sides penalty; blitz lost only if offensive team accepts
result of play-otherwise 5 yard penalty assessed with replay of down. Automatic rush also
permitted during hand-offs and pitch-outs. Defensive contact with passer's arm will result in
10 yard roughing penalty with no loss of down, unless offensive team accepts the result of play.
All forward passes must originate from behind line of scrimmage.
Teams allowed only one forward pass per down. Play stops with loss of down once
quarterback sacked, quarterback loses flag prior to snap, ball carriers flag pulled
or otherwise lost or if ball caught simultaneously by opposing players. If flag lost prior
to reception, receiver remains eligible but cannot advance ball. Ball always spotted at
point where flag is detached with ball extension not applicable. Receiver may not step out-of-bounds during play and both
feet must land in-bounds for pass-completion. Completion awarded, however, if receiver is pushed out of bounds while feet not in contact with playing field. Ball carrier may not leave feet unless
inside opponents five yard line. If ball carriers knee touches ground, play
continues until contact made by defensive team. Fumbles result in dead ball with change of possession only if any opposing player is within five yards of the ballcarrier. Touchdowns=7 pts. for offense. Safeties=2 pts. for defense.
Body blocking (i.e. shielding) is only form of blocking permitted in
non-contact league. Arm/hand blocking, chest blocking and take-out blocks both at line or down
field are prohibited and will result in loss of down and 10 yard penalty from point of
infraction. Additional unnecessary roughness penalty may be assessed.
Bumping off line prohibited and will result in 5 yard penalty after
conclusion of play. Defensive pass interference will result in placement of ball at point
of infraction and automatic first down. Removing flag prior to reception will also
constitute pass interference. Offensive pass interference/pushing off will
result in loss of down and 10 yard penalty.
Ball carrier responsible for avoiding contact and must be in control
of body at all times; charging into or knocking down defensive player will result in 10
yard penalty from point of infraction. Additional unnecessary roughness
penalty may be assessed. Pass rusher(s) responsible for avoiding contact and must be in
control of body at all times; charging into or knocking down offensive player will result
in 10 yard penalty from point of infraction. Additional unnecessary roughness
penalty may be assessed.
Offsides calls and untucked jerseys will result in 5 yard penalty
and loss of down. Player substitutions from more than one designated sideline will result in a 5 yard penalty prior to the snap and loss of down. Shielding flag with arm/hand and stiff arming defender will
result in stoppage of play at time of infraction and 5 yard penalty. Shirt grabbing and/or
wrapping ball carrier to pull flag will result in additional 10 yards for
offensive team after conclusion of play. Should last remaining defensive player impede
forward progress of ball carrier TD automatically awarded and 10 yard penalty assessed on
ensuing kickoff.
Unnecessary roughness, tackling ball carrier or flag
tying will result in automatic first down, spotting of ball at half distance to goal line
and game ejection. Two
such penalties during game by same team will result in forfeit. Two such penalties during
season by same player will result in suspension for remainder of season and forfeiture of
league fees.
All players shoving, taunting or otherwise agitating will be ejected
for full series of downs. Fighting will result in either: game ejection for all players
involved and continuation of game, termination of game with current score recorded as
final, or termination of game with instigators team losing by forfeit, all at
referees discretion. Failure of ejected player to vacate premises will result in
warning and then game forfeit. Furthermore, league commissioner reserves right to
permanently eject all such players from league with forfeiture of league fees.
Challenging a referee's call will be charged as a time-out unless the referee changes the ruling as a result. If no time-out is available, a 5 yard delay of game penalty will be assessed. Further argument will result in warning followed by 10 yard penalty for team and then game ejection for offending player, warning
and game forfeit if conduct persists. Physical contact with the referee will result in permanent ejection from the league with forfeiture of league fees.
Alcoholic beverages and beverage coolers are prohibited and the consumption or possession by any players, coaches or spectators will result in game forfeit by the offending team. Teams are also responsible for the disposal of all litter.
All other rules follow judgment of referee and/or judgment of league
commissioner under N.F.L. guidelines.
